Description

Summoning the Documentary Image:
Archives of the Iran-Iraq War in Contemporary Iranian Art

The Elahé Omidyar Mir-Djalali Institute of Iranian Studies presents Iranian Art Series on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, 1 p.m. (Eastern Time: Canada and US).

In the administrative sense, the visual archives of the Iran-Iraq War were, and remian. limited, controlled, and curated. However, these archival materials became pervasive, immense, and immersive through generational transfer, private collections, and their remediation across various forms of visual culture. This talk explores the operations of visual archives of war photography, focusing on the way artists of the 1980s generation engaged with these materials in the 2000s and 2010s. I analyze the aesthetic practices and strageties of Iranian artists who summoned archival images of war in the post-war period. Through their work, these artists insinuate aesthetic and visual engagements that reshape both official and collective memories of the war.
