The Cairo Stela of Sehetepibre (CG 20538): Borrowings and Innovation

First paragraph

Cairo CG 20538, the late twelfth dynasty stela belonging to the Royal Seal-bearer and Deputy Chief Treasurer Sehetepibre, has long been known for its Loyalist Instructions (Vc8–20). Sehetepibre’s Instructions became the prototype for similar loyalist teachings. Although an earlier composition date has been suggested for such instructions, possibly as early as the reign of Senwosret I, Sehetepibre’s remains the earliest of extant copies. It is also well known that another section of Sehetepibre’s text—the autobiographical portion narrating his participation in the Osiris Mysteries at Abydos, also on the Verso of the stela (Vc1–8)—was partly borrowed from an earlier stela, CG 20539, belonging to the Vizier Mentuhotep, who served Senwosret I.
