Areas of Interest

My research focuses on examining the dynamics of religion and science within the Islamic traditions by exploring the reception of evolutionary biology (and related pre-modern subjects) within Quranic exegetical circles.

Biography

I am currently examining the reception and the impact of Darwinian evolution on exegetical frameworks and genres of Qur'anic tafsir (exegesis), with a broader focus on the evolution of the relationship between the philosophies of religion and science across Islamic history. Holding the Ontario Graduate Scholarship doctoral award (OGS), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council masters scholarship (SSHRC), and a couple of U of T based awards.

Education

Completed a science degree at U of T, with a focus on health & disease. Completed and Islamic Studies degree at Al-Azhar University, with a focus on Quranic exegesis. Completed a second BA in U of T in religion, a masters in religion

Teaching Experience

I am passionate about knowledge translation and community mobilization. I am humbled with the opportunity to serve as an associate chaplain at Brock University, a member of the McMaster University's Spiritual Care and Learning Community, and an imam/educator at ISNA Canada.
