This is the first book of English translations of the poetry of the twentieth-century Iranian poet Parvin E'tesami. There are translations of her poetry in the text of literary discussions in articles about her in English, and scattered translations in collections of translated Persian poetry. But her poetry has not been analyzed in any depth in terms of social and cultural influences on her. Recent scholarship in North America has given more attention to Parvin's compatriot Forugh Farrokhzad (1935-1967), whose poetry is more personal and outspoken and more readily accessible to contemporary sensibilities. Compared to the information available about Parvin, there is copious information about Forugh, who gave interviews and has been a subject of the interest of Iranian scholars and her fellow poets and writers.
