Canadian Society for the Advancement of Turkish Studies Fair Play

The Canadian Society for the Advancement of Turkish Studies (CSATS) is hosting an engaging online event on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 12 pm ET.

Professor Ahmet Talimciler from Bakırçay University in Izmir will delve into the fascinating intersection of Politics and Soccer (Futbol) in Türkiye.

Football, or soccer, holds a special place in Turkish culture, with its origins dating back to the Ottoman Empire. Professor Talimciler will explore the rich history of the sport, from its introduction by English residents to its current role as a powerful force shaping Turkish society.

In his presentation, Professor Talimciler will discuss how football in Türkiye goes beyond the game itself, touching on themes of money, power, control, politics, freedom, struggle, and passion. He will shed light on the complexities of football's influence in authoritarian regimes, where it can both fuel nationalism and exacerbate societal tensions.

Particularly in recent years, football stadiums have become battlegrounds for ideological clashes, amplifying polarization and populism. Professor Talimciler will examine how stadiums have evolved into arenas for competing chants and expressions of secularism, nationalism, and religious conservatism.
