Associate Professor Heather D. Baker has recently received the SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada) Insight Development Grant for her project entitled “Inheritance and Inequality in Urban Babylonia".
The Insight Development Grants support the research of early career and established scholars in its initial stages. The grants enable the development of new research questions and experimentation with new methods, theoretical approaches and/or ideas.
Professor Baker’s project uses the abundant Neo- and Late Babylonian cuneiform legal documents to investigate how far the intergenerational transmission of wealth (via inheritance, dowry, and gift-giving) played a role in generating inequality. She is assisted by a team of NMC graduate student Research Assistants: Mohammad Raza Haider, Inhyuk Cho, Caitlin Smith, and Joseph Chenard (whose work is supported by a SSHRC SIG Fund award).
Congratulations to Professor Baker on this accomplishment!
