Archaeological Survey of Caves in Iraqi Kurdistan, 2015-2017

The Canadian Society for Mesopotamian Studies (CSMS) is now moving to a virtual platform for its activities. Its first lecture of the year 2021 will take place on Zoom on March 17, 2:00 PM, and will be followed by a question period.

Speaker: Arthur Stefanski, Doctoral Candidate, Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations

From 2015 to 2017, the Upper Greater Zab Archaeological Reconnaissance project surveyed 110 caves in Iraqi Kurdistan along the southern slopes of the Akre Massif, the Prt Range, the southeastern slopes of the Pirat Mountains and the Harir Massif, as well as the Qala Qasm Range and the Safin Massif. This lecture will present the results of this survey work, outlining the geography of the region and previous research in the area, and showcasing the most significant caves and their finds.
